The only way to know yours is to pull out a swatch of counted stitches and measure the strand that comes off it.
200 is a placeholder, not a fact. The Craft Yarn Council standard specifies gauge, needle and hook and says nothing whatever about put-up, so this figure exists only on your ball band.
10% covers weaving in, a seam allowance and one swatch. Raise it for a garment sewn from many pieces; drop it to zero for a scarf worked in one piece and cut nowhere.
This page’s own assumption, not a published one: two people unravelling the same swatch land within about a tenth of each other. Set it to zero if you measured your own and trust it.

The band crosses a skein boundary: at the low end of the per-stitch figure this piece takes 6, at the high end 7. Buy the larger number in one dye lot — a skein bought later is a different bath and shows as a line across the work — or narrow the band by measuring your own per-stitch length instead of accepting the prefilled one.
This figure is an estimate, not a measurement. It assumes 0.95 in of yarn per stitch worked in knit, stockinette, 10% added for seams and ends, and 200 yd on a skein. Every part of that is editable above, and your own shop’s guidance beats ours — round up rather than down.
Inches per stitch is back-calculated from published project yardages at worsted weight, not measured, and it shifts with yarn weight, stitch pattern, tension and hand. How to get a yardage figure you can spend money on
The accuracy lives in one field: the length a single stitch eats.
Describe the piece in whichever terms you already have
If the project is charted or written out, you know its stitch count and its row count, and those go straight in. If all you have is a size — a 36 by 48 inch lap blanket, a 60 inch scarf — switch to measurements and add a gauge, and the counts are derived from it and rounded up, because a part stitch cannot be worked. The product of the two numbers is a count of loops and is exact; it is the only exact figure this page produces and everything else is built on top of it.
Fix the length one stitch eats, and prefer measuring it to accepting it
Choosing a stitch fills the field with a shared figure, but the figure that matters is yours: unravel a piece of known stitch count and divide the length of yarn that comes off it by the number of stitches. The calibration box does that division for you and will take a whole finished project rather than a swatch — a blanket you have made and the yardage it really took give a far better number than any table can, because it carries your tension, your yarn and your stitch pattern in one figure.
Set the waste and the put-up, then read the band rather than the middle
Yards per skein comes off your ball band and nowhere else, and the waste percentage covers weaving in, seaming and the swatch you already knitted. The result appears as a middle figure with an interval around it and a skein count rounded up. When the interval straddles a skein boundary no single skein count is printed at all — that is deliberate, and the honest reading is to buy the larger number in one dye lot rather than to hope for the low end.

Frequently asked questions
Where does the inches-per-stitch figure come from, and can I trust it?
It comes from a shared table of worsted-weight averages, and it is a starting point rather than an answer — calibrate before you buy, because readings taken off real finished projects routinely land well above the prefilled figures and the difference is measured in whole skeins. Nobody publishes length per stitch: it is not on a ball band, it is not in the Craft Yarn Council standard, and it cannot be, because it depends on stitch pattern and tension as much as on the yarn — a cabled panel eats far more than the same stitch count in plain stockinette, and a loose hand on a large needle eats more than a tight one. The calibration box takes about a minute: give it the stitch count of anything you have already finished and the yardage it actually consumed, and it hands back a figure measured on your own work.
The pattern already says how many balls. Why calculate at all?
Because that number was written for a specific yarn in a specific put-up, and one of those three things has usually changed by the time you buy. Substituting a yarn changes it, since two skeins of identical weight can hold very different lengths. Changing size changes it, and not proportionally — a garment two sizes up is more than two sizes' worth of yarn because area grows with both dimensions at once. Working the piece longer, adding a border, or knitting at a gauge other than the printed one all change it. The stitch count is the thing that does not lie, which is why this page starts there.
Do cables, colorwork and texture change the answer?
Yes, and by more than most people allow for — this is the largest single source of error on the page. A cable pulls the fabric in, so the same width takes more stitches and each of those stitches also carries more yarn through the crossing; estimates in the region of a third more for a heavily cabled fabric are common and are not an upper bound. Stranded colorwork is worse in a different way: two yarns run along every row, so the length consumed is roughly double even though the stitch count is unchanged, and floats behind the work add more. The way to handle all of it is to calibrate against a piece worked in the same technique rather than to scale a plain-stockinette figure by guesswork.
Why does it sometimes refuse to give me a skein count?
Because the interval around the estimate crosses a skein boundary, and printing one number there would be a guess dressed as arithmetic. If your yardage lands between 1,150 and 1,400 and your skeins hold 200 yards, the honest answer is six or seven, not six. Two ways out: narrow the interval by measuring your own length per stitch instead of accepting the prefilled one, or buy the larger figure. Buying up is not waste in the way it feels — an extra skein bought in the same dye lot is insurance you cannot buy later, and the leftover figure printed beside the result tells you how much of it you would expect to have left.
Does working in the round take more yarn than working flat?
No — a stitch consumes the same length whichever direction the fabric is going, so a hat of 10,000 stitches and a flat piece of 10,000 stitches at the same gauge want the same yarn. What changes is everything around the stitches. Working flat means seams, and a seam eats yarn and needs tails left long enough to sew with, which is what the waste percentage is for. Working in the round means no seams but often means steeks, a join at every round, and in colorwork a float carried across areas you would have left out flat. If you are moving a pattern between the two, adjust the waste allowance rather than the per-stitch figure.
I have 400 yards and no pattern. How big a piece will it make?
Run the arithmetic backwards: multiply your yardage by 36 to get inches, divide by your length per stitch, and that is the stitch budget. At 400 yards and a calibrated 0.85 inches a stitch that is about 16,900 stitches, which at 5 stitches and 7 rows to the inch is a piece around 22 inches by 22 — or, held to 8 inches wide, a scarf of 422 rows finishing about 60 inches long. Take a tenth off the budget before you plan against it, for the same seams and ends the waste field covers here, and remember that the last skein is the one you run out of in the middle of a row.
Is ten percent enough to allow for waste?
For a single piece with two ends to weave in, ten percent is generous. For anything sewn together it is often not: a cardigan in five pieces has ten seams' worth of tails, a fringe consumes yarn that never appears in any stitch count, and a garment with a separate button band, collar and pockets can lose closer to a fifth. Two cases deserve zero rather than ten: a scarf worked in one piece and cut nowhere, and any project where you have already added the border stitches to the count instead of leaving them out. The field is there to be changed, and the interval beside the result shows whether the change matters.
About the yardage formula, and the one term nobody publishes
The formula is short enough to write in a line: length equals stitches times rows times the length of yarn in one stitch, divided by thirty-six to get yards. Two of those three terms are things you can count. The third is not published anywhere. It is not on a ball band, which gives length and weight and a suggested gauge; it is not in the Craft Yarn Council’s weight standard, which specifies gauge ranges, needle diameters and hook sizes and says nothing about consumption; and it could not be in either, because it is a property of the fabric rather than of the yarn. A stitch worked loosely takes more yarn than the same stitch worked tightly in the same skein, and a cable crossing takes more than both.
That is why this page exists as a calculator rather than a lookup, and why the calibration box is the most useful control on it. Unravelling a swatch works; taking the figure off a finished project works better, because a whole blanket averages over thousands of stitches and carries your tension, your yarn and your stitch pattern in one number. Once you have it, the same figure serves every project you work the same way, and the rest of the arithmetic is trivial. What it deliberately does not do is guess your gauge for you: that comes from a swatch you measured, and a yardage estimate built on a gauge you assumed is wrong twice over.
The reason this is presented with an interval rather than as a number is that yarn is not like the other materials on this site. A chart made of fuse beads has an exact bill of materials: every cell is one bead, the count is a count, and buying is a matter of arithmetic and packet sizes. Yarn has no such unit. The stitch count is exact in the same way, and it is printed that way here, but the meters behind it are a measurement of something nobody measured — which is precisely why a page that returns one confident number is the page to distrust.
