Rows follow the shape of the photograph. This is the only control that changes how long the piece takes: 100 across is 10,000 crosses at full coverage, and doubling it quadruples that.

14 stitches to the inch, 1.81 mm a square. It sets the finished measurement and how much thread each cross swallows, not the chart itself — the same chart works on any of them.

Every cell takes its own nearest color. Flat areas stay flat and the color count stays low — the right choice for anything worked by hand.

Stitches. A shade wanted fewer times than this is dropped and its squares go to the nearest shade left standing. It is a price control, not a quality one: the shop sells whole skeins, so 12 stitches of a shade costs the same skein as 900 do. At 1 nothing is merged and you see the raw match.

Of the six in a skein. Three is the usual coverage on 11-count, two on 14 and 16, one on 18 and finer. Every extra strand is a proportional amount of thread.

One skein holds roughly 8 m with all six strands lying together, which separates out to 48 m of single strand. Change it for another brand, or when you work from a cone.

Percent. Covers the tail buried at each start, the end woven in, and the length left on the needle when it gets too short to work. Push it up if the chart is confetti-heavy — those stitches are almost all start and end.

How to chart a photograph so it is still worth stitching

The third one is what people skip, and what they then abandon the piece over.

  1. Crop to the subject before the file goes in

    A converter spends its squares evenly across whatever it is given, so a head that fills a third of the frame gets a third of the width. At 100 stitches across that is 33 squares for a whole face, which is enough for a silhouette and not enough for an expression — two squares of the wrong shade in the eye area and the likeness is gone. Crop the photograph to the part you actually intend to stitch, in whatever you already use, and drop that. Nothing here can put back detail the crop did not include, and nothing here will pretend to.

  2. Set the width first, then the cloth

    Width is the only control that changes how long the piece takes, and it does so quadratically: 100 stitches across a 4:5 photograph is 12,500 crosses, 140 across the same photograph is 24,500. The cloth changes none of that — it changes the finished measurement and how much thread each cross swallows. The same chart worked on 11-count aida is 9.1 inches wide, on 14-count is 7.1, and on 18-count is 5.6. Pick the width for the number of crosses you are willing to make, then pick the cloth for the space the finished piece has to fit.

  3. Read the two figures under the chart before buying floss

    The skein total and the single-stitch count are the two numbers that decide whether this is a project or a regret. The skein total is at least one per shade, because a shop will not sell you a fifth of a skein for the eleven stitches of DMC 3866 the match wanted. The single-stitch count is how many crosses have no neighbor above, below or beside them in their own shade, so each is a separate start, a separate end and a buried tail. Raise the merge threshold until both look survivable, then take the CSV or the copied floss list to the shop and print the chart for the frame.

Frequently asked questions

What is confetti, and what number should I be watching?

Confetti is a stitch with no neighbor of its own shade above, below or beside it, and this page counts them for you — watch the percentage, not the total. Each one is a thread started, one cross worked, the thread ended and the tail buried, so a hundred of them cost more evenings than a thousand stitches worked as a run. Under about one stitch in eight is comfortable going. Above that the chart is mostly thread management, and the three things that actually reduce it are raising the merge threshold, turning shade blending off, and cropping to a subject with less texture. Making the chart wider does not help: more squares means more places for a lone shade to land.

Why does a key with 31 shades want at least 31 skeins?

Because a skein is the smallest thing a shop will sell, so a shade needed eleven times costs exactly what a shade needed nine hundred times costs. That is why the merge control exists and why it defaults to on: it is a price control rather than a quality one. Since the match runs independently on every square, an unmerged chart of a photograph comes back with a long tail of shades wanted a handful of times apiece. Every one of those is still a whole skein, a thread change and a tail to bury. Raise the threshold and the page states exactly what went: how many shades, how many stitches moved onto their neighbors, and how many skeins that took off the list.

Does this give me backstitch, fractional stitches or French knots?

No — every square here is one full cross and nothing else. Backstitch is an outline a designer draws on top of a chart to put an edge back where whole crosses lose it, and there is no honest way to derive it from a photograph: the tool would have to decide which edges in the picture are the ones you meant. Fractional stitches (a quarter and a three-quarter sharing a square) and French knots are the same problem. If you want outlines, work the chart first and add backstitch by eye where the piece asks for it; a photograph charted in whole crosses is a legitimate finished object, and pretending otherwise is how converters end up shipping charts full of unstitchable half-squares.

My photo has a busy background. Do I have to stitch all of it?

You do not, and the cheapest way to skip it is to make the background transparent before the file comes in. A square that reads as more than half transparent is left as bare cloth here rather than filled with white, so it carries no stitch and appears in none of the counts or skein figures — the difference on a 100 by 125 chart with a cut-out subject is routinely four thousand crosses. Save the cropped subject as a PNG with an alpha channel from whatever you already use and drop that. If the background stays, it is worth knowing that a blurred one costs more shades than a sharp one, because gradual tonal drift is exactly what a fixed palette breaks into bands.

Will a shade look on the cloth the way it looks in the key?

Not exactly, and this page prints how far off it might be for each shade. The number and the name come from DMC and are exact; the color does not come from DMC at all, because the company has never issued sRGB for its threads. What sits behind a swatch here is one reading of a physical card, and a second independent reading of the same 454 shades lands on identical bytes for a single one of them — 310, black. Thirty more come within 8 of 255, the middle of the distribution is 25 apart, and the extreme is 155 on 505 Jade Green. Any shade at 40 or worse prints that number in amber next to it, and those are the ones worth deciding with a card in your hand.

Can I work the chart in Anchor threads instead?

Yes, but convert the key rather than expecting a like-for-like swap. Anchor and DMC are different manufacturers dyeing different cotton, so a conversion table gives you the nearest thread somebody else judged acceptable, not the same color: the published mapping is many-to-one, with 464 Anchor numbers landing on 360 DMC codes, and it does not round-trip. Take the CSV this page gives you, convert the numbers, and check the substitutions in the shades that matter — the ones carrying most of the stitches and the ones in a face. A photo chart is more forgiving than a designed one here, because it has no flat blocks of a single shade for a bad substitute to sit in.

Where do I start stitching — the middle or a corner?

The middle, and the chart is ruled to make that easy: a heavy line falls every ten squares and the edges are numbered, so the center of a 100 by 125 chart is column 50, row 63 and you can count to it from a rule rather than from the margin. Starting in the middle is what keeps the design centered on cloth you cut generously, since a counting error near a corner pushes the whole piece off the fabric and you find out at the end. Fold the cloth in quarters, crease it, and put the first cross where the creases meet. If the chart printed as more than one sheet, the two columns and rows repeated at each join are there so you can carry a row across the page break without recounting.

About photo charts, and why they behave nothing like a designed one

A designed cross stitch chart and a converted one are different objects that happen to print the same way. A designer picks perhaps twenty shades, blocks them deliberately, and keeps runs long because they know a run is what makes stitching pleasant. A converter has no such intention: it matches every square independently to the nearest thread it can find, so wherever the photograph drifts smoothly between two tones it produces a scatter of both — and wherever the sensor put noise, it produces a shade nobody would have chosen, once. That is the whole difference, and it is measurable, which is why this page reports the count of stitches that end up with no neighbor of their own shade instead of leaving you to discover the figure in week three. The number that actually predicts the experience is not how many shades the key holds, and it is not the size — those are the two you can settle in advance with the size calculator and the aida calculator, which work out the finished measurement and the piece of cloth to cut for it. It is the proportion of the piece that has to be worked one cross at a time.

The shade numbers handed back are exact and the colors beside them are not, and on a chart that is one square per stitch the difference matters more than it does on a swatch page. DMC issues numbers and names; it has never issued sRGB for its threads. So what stands behind every floss swatch you have ever looked at — here, in an app, on a printed conversion card — is one person’s reading of a physical card under one person’s light. Two such readings were set against each other across all 454 codes for this site: exactly one shade matches byte for byte, 310, black; 30 more land within 8 of 255; the middle of the spread is 25 of 255; and on 505 Jade Green the two are 155 apart. Four near-whites in the palette — B5200 Snow White, White, 3865 Winter White and Ecru — no monitor separates at all. What follows for a chart rather than for a swatch is that the uncertainty is systematic: if the reading behind one shade sits warm, every square that matched to it sits warm with it, and some of those squares only matched to it because of the bias. Treat the key as a shortlist to settle against a real card, which is what the DMC color chart is for, and treat a swap to another brand as a substitution rather than an equivalence, which is the subject of the Anchor conversion page.

What this page will not do is worth stating plainly, because the tools that do it anyway are the reason people distrust converters. It produces whole crosses only: no backstitch, no quarter or three-quarter stitches, no French knots, because every one of those is a decision about which edge in a photograph you meant and no arithmetic recovers that. It refuses a chart finer than the file can support rather than coarsening it silently, since a chart that invents shade changes the camera never recorded is a chart you buy cloth against. And it will not rescue a soft photograph: a face that is slightly out of focus at full size is a smear at 100 squares across, and the fix is a sharper picture rather than a wider chart. Lettering is a different job with a different answer — the text generator sets a name in counted stitches with the alphabet and the spacing already decided — and if what you actually want is a file a machine sews rather than a chart a person works, that starts at the embroidery digitizer, where the constraints are stitch paths and jump length rather than skeins and squares.

What happens to the photo you chart

Your picture is opened by JavaScript running in the tab you are reading this in. It is never uploaded, never sent to a server and never stored anywhere — there is no upload step to undo, because there is no upload. Close the tab and nothing of it remains.

The chart is not stored either. Your width, your cloth and your merge threshold live in the page for as long as the tab does and are written nowhere — reload and you are back at an empty drop zone. That is the price of not having to hand a photograph of your own family to anybody, and it is worth paying — but it does mean taking the PNG, the CSV or the copied floss list before the tab closes.
