An eye opening is roughly a fifth of a face’s width, so a head filling this frame gets about 10 studs per eye. Under 32 the mouth is one row deep and the result reads as a mask rather than a person.
Every cell takes its own nearest color. Flat areas stay flat and the color count stays low — the right choice for anything worked by hand.
How to tell whether a photograph will survive being built
The framing, the tonal figure, and the comparison that settles the palette argument.
Frame the head, then let it be cropped
Framing comes first because the crop is taken from the center and has no idea where your subject is standing. Square suits a face that already fills the picture; the 4:5 upright suits a head with shoulders under it. Either way the control reports what proportion of the photograph's area you are throwing away, so somebody positioned off to one side is worth trimming by hand before the file reaches this page rather than after.
Read the tonal figure before you look at the picture
Under the heading is the one number this page exists for: how far the photograph's lightness travels, expressed in steps of the six-tone neutral ramp. Above three steps a face is modeled. At two it is outlined. Below two the page stops and says so, because no palette can reconstruct separation that the exposure removed. If the reading is thin, switch on the tone stretch and watch it move rather than guessing.
Compare the restricted palette against the unrestricted one
Switch to neutrals only. If the face still reads in six grays, the photograph is sound and any hue you add from there is decoration. Then switch to every color in production and see where the saturated shades land — usually a cheek, an iris and the shadow under a jaw, which are precisely the three places a portrait cannot afford a color that shouts. That comparison is the argument for the default, made on your own photograph rather than in the abstract.

Frequently asked questions
My portrait came out as one flat shape. What went wrong?
The photograph almost certainly has no directional light in it. A brick face is built entirely out of the boundary between a lit plane and a shaded one — a cheekbone exists because the plane above it is lighter — and a flash fired straight down the lens, or an overcast sky, removes those boundaries before the file is even written. The tonal reading catches this: it takes the 5th and 95th percentile of perceptual lightness across the studs and compares the gap to the neutral ramp's own step size of 0.164. Under two steps the page refuses. Re-shooting beside a window with the subject turned 45 degrees away from it fixes more portraits than any setting here will.
Which LEGO color is skin?
There is no single one, and the honest answer is that the family is nine shades wide because real skin spans that range under one light. The minifigure colors are Light Nougat, Nougat and Medium Nougat, and they are not interchangeable with the tans and browns around them so much as ranked with them by lightness. Availability makes the choice harder rather than easier: Nougat has 3,084 cataloged elements against Reddish Brown's 180,748, so the shade named after skin is roughly 59 times harder to buy in bulk than the brown a meter of hair will need. Build the ramp from what you can order and let the lightness do the work.
How far back do you have to stand before the studs stop showing?
Further than any room in a house, which is the fact that most advice about brick portraits gets backwards. A stud is 8 mm, and 8 mm subtends one arcminute — the ordinary limit of sharp vision — at 27.5 meters. At three meters, a normal distance for looking at something on a wall, one stud still covers 9.2 arcminutes, so it is nine times larger than the smallest thing your eye can pick out. You never stop seeing the grid indoors. What does fade with distance is hue: color vision resolves detail roughly three times more coarsely than lightness does, so a single stud of the wrong shade blurs into its neighbors around nine meters out while a single stud of the wrong brightness is still visible at twenty. That asymmetry is why this page organizes its palette as a lightness ramp and tests the photograph on lightness alone.
Why does the default palette leave out every bright color?
Because on a face they win cells they should not. Nearest-color matching has no idea that a region is a cheek, so a warm highlight sitting between two available tones can resolve onto Coral or Bright Light Orange when Nougat was the intended reading — and a single saturated stud on skin is read by a viewer as a mistake rather than as a highlight, in a way that the same stud on a roof or a hedge never is. Restricting the list to fifteen removes the possibility rather than relying on luck. The full palette stays one click away so you can see the difference on your own photograph, and for a landscape or a logo it is the right choice, which is what the mosaic page defaults to.
Should a face be dithered?
Usually not, and the exception is Atkinson. Error diffusion scatters isolated studs of a neighboring color through smooth areas, and skin is the largest smooth area in the picture — so on a forehead it reads as acne rather than as gradation, and it multiplies the number of colors you have to buy and keep sorted. Atkinson withholds a quarter of the rounding error instead of passing all of it along, so the mid-tones, which is where nearly all of a face lives, pick up far fewer stray studs. If a photograph genuinely needs help spanning the ramp, the tone stretch is the better instrument, because it changes the input rather than adding noise to the output.
Does a black-and-white printout of this chart still work?
Yes, but only because of the symbols, and this palette proves the point better than most. Medium Nougat and Flat Silver both sit at a perceptual lightness of 0.625 — a warm mid-brown and a mid-gray that a monochrome printer renders as the identical tone. Dark Red and Pearl Titanium are 0.001 apart on the same scale. The tone column in the color table shows those numbers, and the mark in the first column is what distinguishes the rows on paper, in poor light, and for the roughly one person in twelve who cannot separate two adjacent shades by eye anyway.
Square or 4:5, and what does the crop throw away?
4:5 for a head with shoulders under it, square for a face that fills the frame, and the tool reports the percentage of the photograph's area you lose either way. The crop is taken from the center, so a subject standing off to one side will be cut into — trim the photograph yourself first if the composition matters. Keeping the photograph's own shape is the third option and is right when the framing is already what you want on the wall, but it means the stud count each way is whatever the camera happened to produce rather than a number you chose.
About why lightness decides a brick portrait and color does not
A face is recognized from its shading, not from its hue. Everything that makes one person distinguishable from another at a glance — the ridge of a brow, the plane under a cheekbone, the hollow at a temple — is a lightness boundary, and a passport photograph printed in gray is still unmistakably that person while the same photograph flattened to one tone and tinted correctly is nobody. That is why this palette is built as a ramp. Six neutrals step from 0.179 to 1.000 on a perceptual lightness scale in gaps of 0.09 to 0.28, and the nine warm shades interleave with them — two of them landing on a neutral’s exact tone — so choosing a color here is choosing a tone and getting a hue for free rather than the other way round. The two grays left out, Light Gray and Metallic Silver, sit within 0.02 of Light Bluish Gray, which means either would win studs without adding a step to the ramp.
The distance argument is where most advice about brick portraits goes wrong. “Just stand further back” assumes the studs eventually merge, and indoors they do not: a stud is 8 mm, and 8 mm reaches the one-arcminute limit of ordinary vision only at 27.5 meters. At the three meters you would actually view a framed piece from, a stud covers 9.2 arcminutes and is nine times larger than the finest detail your eye resolves. What does merge is color. Chromatic vision carries roughly a third of the spatial resolution of luminance vision, so a single stud of the wrong hue is already blending into its neighbors at a few meters while a single stud of the wrong brightness stays visible across a room. The practical consequence is exactly the design of this page: get the tones right and hue errors forgive themselves, get the tones wrong and no palette will rescue it.
Which is also why this is the one page on the site that refuses. A flat photograph is not a hard case, it is an impossible one — a 0.25 lightness spread cannot be spread across a ramp that steps by 0.164, so the match has two tones to work with and returns a silhouette however many colors are technically available. Most converters hand that back anyway and let you find out after the plates arrive. The tone stretch is offered first, because pulling the 2nd and 98th percentiles apart genuinely recovers a badly-exposed file, and the refusal only stands when the stretch has nothing left to pull. If you want the same picture treated as a scene rather than a face, with the baseplate layout and the availability filter that a large build needs, the mosaic page is the one to use. The same tonal question decides a paint-by-numbers conversion and a diamond painting chart, and it decides ASCII art most brutally of all, where a glyph carries no color whatsoever and a flat photograph has literally nothing to become. Portraits are the one input on this site that is a person rather than a thing, so it is worth stating twice. There is no gallery the photograph lands in, no processing queue it waits in and no record of it to ask about afterwards; the settings you chose are forgotten when the tab closes, and the only thing that outlives the session is a file you saved yourself.
