Split 3,465 beads evenly across 12 colors and each needs 289, which is 1 bag apiece. Real designs are nothing like even — a background routinely takes 40 percent of the pegs on its own, so one color runs to several bags while nine others need a few hundred each and still cost a full bag. Treat the even figure as the floor of a range whose ceiling you only learn from a real color list.
This figure is an estimate, not a measurement. It assumes 1,000 beads in a single-color bag, 3% added for beads that go on the floor or into the wrong pile, and that every color is bought in whole bags because that is how they are sold. Every part of that is editable above, and your own shop’s guidance beats ours — round up rather than down.

Size is the grid multiplied by the pitch, so the same 3,364-peg design is 151 mm wide in mini and 580 mm in maxi — a factor of 3.8 for identical work. The bead totals above do not change with size, because the peg count does not: choosing a bigger bead makes the piece bigger, never longer to make.

The two bag figures, read against each other, are what change the number you order.
Say whether you have a chart yet
Before a chart exists you have a rectangle and a rough idea of how many shades it will take, and the answer is a range. Once a chart exists you have a color list, and the answer is arithmetic. The two routes ask for different things on purpose — the first cannot know how a design divides between shades, and that division is the entire question.
Paste the list, header and all
One color a line. The last whole number on the line is read as the count and everything in front of it as the label, which is why a CSV exported from a chart page, a couple of columns typed by hand, and a block dragged straight out of a table on screen all go in without editing. Lines carrying no number at all are reported back rather than guessed at, and a code that appears twice is added together.
Read the two bag figures against each other
The total divided by the bag size is what every other calculator shows you. Beside it is the sum of each color rounded up on its own, which is what the shop actually charges for, and the gap between them is the money. Adjust the spillage allowance and the bag size to match what your supplier sells, then check the leftover column before you decide the design needs one more shade.

Frequently asked questions
Why is the bag count higher than my bead total divided by 1,000?
Because beads are not interchangeable between colors and bags are sold by color. A thousand beads is one purchase only when all thousand are the same shade; spread over twenty-three shades it is twenty-three purchases, since you cannot buy four-fifths of a bag of gray. That makes the number of colors, not the number of beads, the thing that sets the bill — twenty-three colors cannot come to fewer than twenty-three bags however small the design is. It is why a modest design in many shades outspends a large one in few.
Does a 1,000-bead tub count as 1,000 in the bag field?
No, and this is the commonest way people underbuy. A mixed tub, bucket or jar states its total across every color inside it, so a 1,000-bead assortment of thirty shades holds roughly thirty of each — nowhere near a bag of any one of them. The bag field wants the count of a single-color pack, which is what you will be reordering from once the tub runs out of the one shade your design leans on. If you only own mixed tubs, work out how many of them your worst color needs and expect a lot of surplus in the other twenty-nine.
How much spillage should I allow?
Three percent covers ordinary adult loss — beads dropped, placed and pulled again, or fused into a corner that got binned. Push it to ten or fifteen when a child under six is doing the placing, because at that age a meaningful share of the bag ends up on the floor, in the sofa or briefly in a mouth. Push it up again for anything worked on a lap or a rug rather than a table. It is deliberately a field rather than a constant: the honest figure depends on who is placing the beads and on what surface, and nobody can measure that from here.
My design is cut out to a silhouette — what do I put for pegs filled?
Somewhere between 40 and 70 percent for most silhouettes, and lower than you expect. A rectangle full of picture fills every peg; a character on a transparent background is mostly empty rectangle, and only the pegs carrying a bead cost anything. The quickest honest way to get the number is to chart the design first and read the filled count off the key, because a guess here scales the entire result. Where a chart already exists, use the pasted-list route instead and the coverage question disappears — the list only contains beads that are actually placed.
What do I do about a color I only need twelve of?
Decide whether it earns a whole bag, because that is what it costs. Twelve beads and eleven hundred beads are the same purchase, so a shade used for one eye highlight is priced identically to the background. Three ways out: merge it into its nearest neighbor and lose the detail, buy a mixed assortment and pick out the dozen you need, or keep it because it is the shade that makes the piece work. What matters is that the decision is made deliberately rather than discovered on the receipt, which is what the leftover column is for.
Does choosing bigger beads mean buying more of them?
No — the count is set by the pegs, not by their size, so the same design needs the same number of beads at every diameter. What changes is the piece: a 100 by 100 design measures 260 mm across in 2.6 mm beads, 500 mm in 5 mm beads and a full meter in 10 mm ones, a factor of nearly four for identical work and identical counts. That is the useful lever when a design is the right shape and the wrong size, and it is the reason a pattern should be planned in pegs first and converted to millimeters afterward.
Can I paste a list from a chart I made somewhere else?
Yes, as long as each line ends with the count. The parser removes hex values first, then takes the last whole number on the line, which means a color code keeps its digits — the zero in a code like P01 has no word boundary in front of it and is never mistaken for a quantity — and a trailing percentage is ignored because it carries a decimal point. Thousands separators are handled, so a block copied out of a rendered table works as well as raw CSV. Anything it cannot read is listed back to you with its line number instead of being silently dropped.
About why bead totals are the wrong number
Almost every bead calculator answers one question — how many beads are in this design — and that question hardly matters. Beads are sold by shade in whole packs, so what you pay for is a stack of ceilings, one per color, and the ceiling is where the money hides. Take the default rectangle on this page: 58 by 58 is 3,364 pegs, and with a small allowance for spillage that is 3,465 beads, which divides tidily into four bags of a thousand. Now say the design uses twelve shades. Twelve shades cannot be bought in fewer than twelve bags whatever the total is, so the real order is twelve thousand beads and you finish with 8,535 of them still in the packets. The design did not get bigger. It got more colorful, and colorfulness is the thing that is actually priced.
That is why this page will not answer the planning question exactly, and says so. Given only a rectangle and a shade count, the even-split figure is a floor rather than a forecast — real designs are wildly uneven, with a background routinely holding forty percent of the pegs while nine other shades hold a few hundred each and still cost a full pack apiece. The exact answer needs a color list, which means it needs a chart, and the fuse bead chart page is where that comes from: it exports the per-color counts as CSV, and that CSV pastes in here whole. Working in the other direction is worth doing too. If the bag figure comes back higher than you want, go back to the chart, raise the threshold that removes rarely-used shades, and watch the bag count fall much faster than the bead count does — because you are deleting ceilings, not beads.
Rounding up per unit rather than per total is not a bead problem, it is what happens whenever a material is bought in a package and used by the item, and the sibling calculators on this site all wear the same shape. A loom bracelet has the added constraint that the warp is committed before the first row, so the width cannot be revised the way a bead count can. Gauge plays the role the bag size plays here — the one measured input that rescales everything downstream — and tapestry crochet carries a floats-and-yarn version of the same surplus problem, where carrying an extra color along a row costs length rather than packets.
